Anthropic's New Government AI Models Signal the Defense Tech Gold Rush is Real
Anthropic just revealed that the company has built custom AI models specifically for US national security customers, and they're already deployed at "the highest level" of classified government operations.
The news matters because it completes a remarkable transformation across the AI industry. Just 18 months ago, OpenAI prohibited any military use of its technology. Today, its models are heading to actual battlefields through a partnership with defense contractor Anduril. Now Anthropic—long seen as the more cautious, safety-focused alternative to OpenAI—is openly embracing the defense market with purpose-built "Claude Gov" models.

A Guide to Refactoring the Defense-Industrial Base
When most Americans remember President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s farewell address, they think of his warning of the power of the “military-industrial complex,” but he also offered the positive vision of an industrial base “ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction.”
Over 60 years later, America’s adversaries are increasingly testing their luck, often by leveraging inexpensive, commercial off-the-shelf systems to impose asymmetric costs on the United States and its allies and partners. This is causing both a tactical deficit and technical debt the defense-industrial base is struggling to reconcile.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Coding Defense Solutions on the Fly with AI
Two weeks ago, a P-8 aviator asked if I could make a tool to help plan flight schedules when conducting operations against maneuvering submarines.
The daily planning cycle for these kinds of operations usually ties down a couple of officers in a squadron every day. It’s the kind of problem that is easy to throw manpower at but would cost millions and take several years to solve by procuring software through the acquisition system. Given those options, commanders default to throwing people at the problem.

Saab tests AI-controlled Gripen E fighter jet against human pilot in first beyond visual range engagement
On June 11, 2025, Saab announced that three test flights were conducted as part of Project Beyond, a program integrating the Centaur artificial intelligence (AI) system developed by German company Helsing into a production-standard Gripen E fighter aircraft.
The flights occurred between May 28 and June 3 in Swedish civil airspace, marking the first publicly confirmed case of an AI system flying a frontline jet in Beyond Visual Range (BVR) scenarios.
